Week 18

Supporters Club second grade seam bowler Tim Goldman became the third association player this season to achieve the rare feat of a “hat-trick” to pretty much single handedly win the game against Paxton at Baddeley 1 to complete round 18 of competition.

Goldman took the new ball and after a wicket-less first spell he came back into the attack and claimed 5-0 including his hat-trick with the second, third and fourth deliveries of his seventh over. Paxton were cruising at 4-103 in pursuit of 108, but in an amazing finish lost the final six wickets for just one run. Goldman finished the day with the impressive figures of 5-20 off 8 overs.

Meanwhile in first grade the see-sawing battle for the minor premiership continues with Bellbird jumping Greta/Branxton for a share of the lead with Mulbring after their comprehensive 5-wicket victory over Mulbring at Carmichael Park.

Bellbird skipper Andrew Howson won the all-important toss and sent the visitors in to bat on a juicy wicket.

The Marlins struggled throughout their innings and were well below their batting best, dismissed in the 35th over of the forty over contest for just 90. Brad Strachn (32) and Mick Mascord were their best two with the willow, while for Bellbird it was Scott Miller who thrived in the seaming conditions with 5-14 off 10 very good overs. He received good support at the other end from Matt Tomlinson who took 3-26 off 10.

In reply the Tigers shrugged off a minor scare to pass the target in the 28th over after losing five wickets. Matt Fairlie batted sensibly for 33no, with brother Ben Fairlie also patient at the top of the order with 23. Greg Sheehan was the best of the Mulbring attack with 2-14 off 6).

Greta/Branxton vs Wine Country at Miller Park and Peden’s Hotel vs Supporters at the Basin were both washed out.

Wine Country are now mathematically out of the semi-final race, and with just 9 points separating first and fourth place it will be an interesting final three rounds of competition with some telling games to decide the final placings for semi-finals.
